Software based extraction of objective parameters from music performances

چکیده

Different music performances of the same score may significantly differ from each other. It is obvious that not only the composer’s work, the score, defines the listener’s music experience, but that the music performance itself is an integral part of this experience. Music performers use the information contained in the score, but interpret, transform or add to this information. Four parameter classes can be used to describe a performance objectively: tempo and timing, loudness, timbre and pitch. Each class contains a multitude of individual parameters that are at the performers’ disposal to generate a unique physical rendition of musical ideas. The extraction of such objective parameters is one of the difficulties in music performance research. This work presents an approach to the software-based extraction of tempo and timing, loudness and timbre parameters from audio files to provide a tool for the automatic parameter extraction from music performances. The system is applied to extract data from 21 string quartet performances and a detailed analysis of the extracted data is presented. The main contributions of this thesis are the adaptation and development of signal processing approaches to performance parameter extraction and the presentation and discussion of string quartet performances of a movement of Beethoven’s late String Quartet op. 130. music performance, music performance analysis, automatic tempo extraction, loudness analysis, timbre analysis, string quartet performance, audio content analysis, audio-to-score-matching

CUEX: An Algorithm for Automatic Extraction of Expressive Tone Parameters in Music Performance from Acoustic Signals

CUEX is an algorithm that from recordings of solo music performances extracts the tone parameters for tempo, sound level, articulation, onset velocity, spectrum, vibrato rate, and vibrato extent. The aim is to capture the expressive variations in a music performance, rather than to identify the musical notes played. The CUEX algorithm uses a combination of traditional methods to segment the aud...

Classification of Iranian Traditional Music Dastgahs Using Features Based on Pitch Frequency

The Iranian traditional music is composed of seven majors Dastgahs: Chahargah, Homayoun, Mahour, Segah, Shour, Nava, and Rast-Panjgah. In this paper, a new algorithm for the classification of the Iranian traditional music Dastgahs based on pitch frequency is proposed. In this algorithm, the features of Lagrange coefficients of pitch logarithm (LCPL), Fuzzy similarity sets type 2 (FSST2), and th...

Investigating the formal effect of rear wall structure on acoustic parameters of speech halls (Research Article)

Referring to the rear wall in a hall is the furthest element rather than the voice source, therefor the reflections of this structural member play important role in music and speech intelligibly, especially for one-third behind audiences. Hence the form of these structures can be very effective in the acoustical quality of speech halls and auditoria. In this study, four formic structures are ex...

Towards the Objective Assessment of Music Performances

The qualitative assessment of music performances is a task that is influenced by technical correctness, deviations from established performance standards, and aesthetic judgment. Despite its inherently subjective nature, a quantitative overall assessment is often desired, as exemplified by US all-state auditions or other competitions. A model that automatically generates assessments from the au...

Automated methods for audio-based music analysis with applications to musicology

This thesis contributes to bridging the gap between music information retrieval (MIR) and musicology. We present several automated methods for music analysis, which are motivated by concrete application scenarios being of central importance in musicology. In this context, the automated music analysis is performed on the basis of audio material. Here, one reason is that for a given piece of musi...
